　　WASHINGTON — The day after the Senatestrongly endorsed a $700 billion economic bailoutplan, the administration and Congressional leaderstried to muster support on Thursday for the rescuepackage ahead of a crucial vote in the House.

　　Speaking after a meeting at the White Housewith representatives of American businesses,President Bush said it was essential that the House“get this bill passed so we can get about thebusiness of restoring confidence” in the financial system.

　　The Senate passed the bailout plan by a wide margin Wednesday night, leaving backersoptimistic that the easy approval would lead to House acceptance by Friday and end thelegislative uncertainty that has rocked the markets.

　　Ahead of the vote, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 348.22 points on Thursday andthe broader Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index dropped 4 percent.
