　　There are a lot of stories about the beginning of turkey pardoning for Thanksgivings

　　关于感恩节赦免火鸡的起源有很多故事，

　　says the chief historian of the White House Historical Association Edward Lengel.

　　白宫历史协会首席历史学家爱德华·兰格尔如是说。

　　Some of them he says date back to Abraham Lincoln during America's Civil War.

　　许多故事可以追溯到美国内战，林肯执政时代。

　　He had a son named Ted who joked with Abraham Lincoln about this pet turkey that he had who was strolling around the voting booths in 1864

　　林肯有个儿子叫泰德，1864年的一天他和林肯开玩笑，他说他的火鸡一直绕着投票室打转，

　　and Abraham Lincoln asked him why is he strutting around? Is he here to vote?

　　林肯就问他为什么在投票室大摇大摆，来这里投票吗?

　　And Ted answered that his turkey could not vote because he was too young.

　　泰德说他的火鸡不能投票，他还没到投票的年龄。

　　Therefore Abraham Lincoln pardoned this turkey and forgave him from possibility of being killed for the thanksgiving table.

　　因此，亚伯拉罕·林肯赦免了这只火鸡，所以也就免除了它成为感恩节美食的可能。

　　When Harry Truman was president in the 1940s, he began letting the thanksgiving turkey go free.

　　上世纪40年代，杜鲁门总统开始赦免感恩节火鸡。

　　Almost 20 years later in a well-documented occasion, President John F. Kennedy decided to spare a turkey brought to the White House for the thanksgiving table.

　　将近20年后，在一次著名活动上，约翰·肯尼迪决定赦免那只被带进白宫的火鸡。

　　Kennedy said no, I think I'll pardon this turkey and let it grow.

　　肯尼迪说我想赦免这只火鸡，让它自由成长。

　　We know that John F. Kennedy definitely began this tradition and has continued on and off ever since.

　　Today the White House gets its turkeys with help from the National Turkey Federation.

　　There's been an official White House turkey reception ceremony really since Harry Truman was the first to have a public ceremony.

　　The procured turkeys are pardoned and often sent to a petting zoo in the vicinity,

　　赦免过的火鸡将被送到附近的宠物动物园，

　　but the turkey cooked for the president's meal is bought with his own money and prepared according to his taste and that of his family.
