　　Chinese women's advances over last five years

　　More than 1,200 representatives of China's 650million women will discuss women's progress overthe last five years at the Tenth National Women'sCongress from Oct. 28 to 31.

　　In September 2004, the Fourth Plenary Sessionof the 16th Communist Party of China (CPC) CentralCommittee stressed the training and selection ofwomen cadres.

　　The Law on the Protection of Rights and Interests of Women, which was amended in 2005,stipulated that "gender equality is a basic national policy".

　　Last year, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council ordered an end to sexdiscrimination and demanded better education on laws and regulations on women andchildren's rights during family planning work.

　　Training centers and organizations have been established to provide services for migrantwomen workers.

　　Women account for 45.4 percent of China's total employed population and for more than40 percent of all public servants.

　　Female deputies comprise 21.33 percent of the National People's Congress (NPC), up 1.09percentage points from the previous congress, and women make up 17.7 percent of theNational Committee of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), up 1percentage point.
