Juan Antonio Samaranch was given a send-off (farewell, 送别)resembling a state funeral (国葬) in his native Barcelona on Thursday, a day after the former International Olympic Committee (IOC) president died at the age of 89.

King Juan Carlos and his family, current IOC president Jacques Rogge and high-profile figures (名人,受到瞩目的high-profile)from Spanish sport and politics were among the mourners. (哀悼者)

Rafael Nadal, the world's number three tennis player, helped carry the coffin(棺材, 在MJ的葬礼新闻报道中也听到过“casket”) to the city cathedral. (大教堂)

The casket, draped(垂帘, 类似cover) in the Olympic flag, had earlier been placed in the chapel at the Catalan regional government's palace and hundreds of people filed past to pay their respects to the man who brought the Olympic Games to the port city in 1992.

"I came here above all(primarily) to support the (Samaranch) family and show appreciation for everything he did for our sport," Mallorca-born Nadal said.

Samaranch was admitted to the Quiron clinic (诊所,医院)in Barcelona on Sunday with acute (急性) heart problems and passed away on Wednesday after suffering "cardio-respiratory failure." (心肺衰竭)

After steering (“掌舵”, leading)the Olympic movement through two turbulent (动荡) decades, marked by political boycotts(抵制,抵抗), bribery and drug scandals (丑闻)and a greater emphasis on commercialism(营利主义), he was appointed honorary life president (终生名誉主席)of the IOC when he stepped down (~resign, 退休)as president in 2001.

Samaranch became an IOC member in 1966. He took a keen interest in China and personally awarded the country’s first Olympic champion, shooter Xu Haifeng, with his gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Spaniard(Spanish 西班牙人) also lobbied(游说) strongly for the Chinese capital to host the Olympics in 2000 and, when it was beaten by Sydney, again for 2008. One of his last acts as president was to announce the success of the second bid, sparking (点燃,激发)huge jubilation (欢腾,喜庆)in China.

Samaranch will be buried at the cemetery on the Montjuic hill near the stadium that was used for the 1992 Games.
