Valerii Danevych, a wood-crafting master from Ukraine, has dedicated his life to making functional wristwatches entirely out of wood, with the sole exception of a metal spring needed to propel the movement.

Danevych has liked carpentry since he was very young, and he has made many different wooden objects. As he grew up and his skills improved, he got the idea of creating complicated works. In 2005, Danevych showed his keen interest in making wooden watches.

Danevych had no training as a watchmaker. It took a long time for him to determine which type of woods was most suitable for the tiny parts needed, and to learn the basics of watchmaking. By 2008 he had completed his first functional wooden pocket watch.

Danevych works mostly in birch, because of its higher strength and toughness. Sometimes he would choose other wooden materials, for diversity of wood gives the watch movements visual interest.

He claims his wooden watches can store 20 hours of reserve power, and keep time (with an accuracy of around 5 minutes per day).

His most recent masterpiece is a men’s wristwatch, into which he put 1,800 hours of work over a seven-month period.

For his amazing accomplishments in the field of watchmaking, Danevych has been nominated to the Horological Academy of Independent Creators in Switzerland.
