Mid-Autumn Festival in other Asian Countries

On every fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, people all over China will be getting together to eat with their families, look at the bright moon and celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Infulenced by Chinese culture, Mid-Autumn Festival is also a traditional festival in some southeast and northeast Asian countries, especially among those of Chinese descent. Since this festival marks the mid-day of Autumn, Mid-Autumn Festival is thought of as a time to carry the unbounded love towards life and a bright future. However, people in different countries have different customs to celebrate it.

  日本

  Japan

Apart from the Mid-Autumn Festival on August 15th in lunar calender, Japan has another Mid-Autumn Festival on September 13th. Although the Chinese lunar calender was no more used in Japan after the Meiji Restoration, the custom of appreciating the moon that day is kept around Japan. And the Mid-Autumn day was named as "the 15th Night" or "the Bring Moon of Mid-Autumn Festival", or in Japanese "Tsukimi".

The custom was introduced from China into Japan over 1000 years ago. Since then, Japan families gradually have begun to get together to appreciate the moon, and have a big feast, called as "Moongazing feast". Because it's in the last month of the harvest season, Japanese hold various activities to express their gratitude towards the world's gifts.

The festival food in Japan is not moon cake, but a kind of rice dumplings made of cooked and mashed rice, which in Japanese is called "Tsukimi Danko". Tsukimi Danko is only sold in supermarks and department stores during the Mid-Autumn Festival. And today some one may lather red bean paste or other things on Tsukimi Danko to better it.
