　　P:Good question! Investors who buy shares of stock in a company may make money in two ways.

　　史：问得好!在股市上买了某公司股票的投资者可通过两种方式赚钱。

　　They may begin to make money right away.

　　他们可能很快就赚钱。

　　Suppose that a person invests in a company and the company makes money.

　　如果一个人买了效益很好的一家公司的股票，

　　The company shares this money with the investor.

　　公司与投资者共享所挣的钱，

　　This money shared is called a dividend.

　　这分享的钱叫红利。

　　Dividends are usually sent to investors once every three months as long as they own the stock.

　　A second way that investors may make money is to sell the stock at a higher price than they formerly bought.

　　第二种方式是投资者将股票以高于他们买时的价格卖出去，从而赚钱。

　　The price of each share will go up if the company does very well.

　　It may also go up for many other reasons. When it goes up, a person may sell it and make a profit.

　　S3:Could you please give us an example to show how this process works?

　　P:Yes. For example, Mr.and Mrs. Brown have $1 000 to invest.

　　They talk to a stock broker who can help them to buy a good stock. He tells Mr. and Mrs. Brown about the Ward Pencil company,

　　which is making a lot of money by manufacturing pencils and it is selling shares of stock in order to get money to expand.

　　Three months later, the Ward Company issues a dividend of $1.00 a share.

　　A year later, the company expands. It sells many more pencils.

　　plus all of the money they have received in dividends. This is a very good investment.

　　P:Investing money in the stock market is not at all the safest way in the world to make more money.

　　There is no guarantee, for example, that the Ward Pencil Company will do well,

　　and that the stock will go up. The company may do badly.
