SECTION 1 : LISTENING TEST (30 minutes)

Part A: Spot Dictation

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear a passage and read the same passage with blanks in it. Fill in each of the blanks with the words you have heard on the tape. Write your answer in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET. Remember you will hear the passage only once.

Good afternoon, everybody. I’m pleased to be here with you, graduate of 2007. I’m a career counselor and students often approach me with concerns about their future. You see, we are living in a society of great changes with the presence of advanced technology. The process of getting a job in today’s world has changed for the majority of the US population.

Well, how can you use new technologies to help you? First, let’s look at how you find a job. The traditional method of hunting for a job in the past required first doing research on jobs that were available in your field, typically by looking in newspapers, periodicals and magazines, as well as TV ads and making phone calls to prospective employers. Then you decided where and for what post you are going to apply. Put your resume with a cover letter in a stamped envelope and waited anxiously for someone to get back to you.

Well, today, maybe the job search and application process are very much the same but the tools used are much more advanced and they required more skills and expertise. In fact, technology has not so much changed the process as enhanced it. The benefit both for the employer and employee is that this makes the search more open to people of different social-economic background all over the world. But as more people are involved, it becomes more competitive for the applicant than it ever was before.

The secret to preparing yourself for the working world today is learning these new and ever-changing tools and combining them with the older methods people have been using for years. For example, on the internet, you can search for employment not only in your own city but also in your state, in your country, and even other countries. You can copy information from a webpage and paste it into a Microsoft word document that’s easy to access and edit at any time. In many ways, it’s easier now. Just type your job application, click and send it through email. It gets there in an instant.

  Part B: Listening Comprehension

Directions: In this part of the test there will be some short talks and conversations. After each one, you will be asked some questions. The talks, conversations and questions will be spoken only once. Now listen care fully and choose the right answer to each question you have heard and write the letter of the answer you have chosen in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET.

Apple today introduced Safari 3, the world's fastest and easiest-to-use web browser for Windows PCs and Macs. Safari has always been the fastest browser on the Mac, and now it's the fastest browser on the Windows, loading and drawing web pages up to twice as fast as Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, and up to 1.6 times faster than Mozilla Firefox 2. Safari 3 features easy-to-manage bookmarks, effortless browsing with easy-to-organize tabs, and a built-in RSS reader to quickly scan the latest news and information. Other Safari features now available to Windows users includes snapback, one-click access to an initial search query, resizable text fields, and private browsing to ensure that information about an individual's browsing history isn't stored.

  Afghanistan

Floods triggered by heavy rain killed 23 people and destroyed scores of houses in Afghanistan's northeastern province of Badakhshan, the provincial governor said on Friday. Authorities were searching for missing people after the flooding, which hit on Thursday night in an area of impoverished and mountainous province near the border with Tajikistan, China, and Pakistan. After years of harsh drought, Afghanistan received much more snow and rain this year.

  Cuba

Two Cuban soldiers tried to hijack a passenger plane to escape to a foreign country with hostages on Monday, but were arrested after killing an unarmed military officer on board, the government said. The soldiers, who had escaped from an army base where they were doing military service, hijacked a bus with passengers, took it to the domestic terminal of Havana Airport, and seized an

empty passenger jet before dawn. They killed one of the hostages, an army lieutenant colonel, when he tried to stop the hijacking, but were then captured by a military unit, the government said in a statement.

  Canada

The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a welcome addition to any piggy bank on Wednesday -- a monster gold coin with a face value of 1 million Canadian dollars that it says is the world's biggest, purest and highest denomination coin. The Canadian mint introduced the mega-coin, which is the size of an extra-large pizza, and weighs in at 100 kilograms alongside the one-ounce gold bullion coins it is mass producing at its Ottawa plant. Originally designed to promote the new one-ounce coins, the colossal coins will be issued in a very limited quantity. While they have a 1 million Canadian dollar face value, the coins are worth twice that amount, given the current gold price of $683.30 per ounce.

Question 6: What is happening in Las Vegas from June 11th to 13th?

Question 7: What has Apple introduced today?

Question 8: What happened in Afghanistan's northeastern province of Badakhshan?

Question 9: Which of the following statements is true about the hijacking of a

passenger plane in Cuba?

Question10: What is the current worth of the mega coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint?

  Q6-Q10

  Washinton

  San Fransisco

  Afghanistan

  Cuba

  Canada

  Q11-Q15
  原文

W: Hi, Frank! I just saw a program on TV that said that juvenile crime was increasing. And I want to ask your opinion about how to stop… well… how to prevent juvenile crime, because I know that you work with a lot of young people.

M: Well, first… I think the media exacerbated the problem, and so does the school system. Where I live, we have thousands of security guards in the schools, and metal detectors, too. And the kids get searched as they go into school. Now all of that presents the wrong message. The kids don’t feel like they’re going to school. They feel like they’re going to jail. And so they are more likely to lash out and become violent. I think it’s a cause-and-effect relationship. The students get violent because the system makes them like that.

W: So you’re saying that the messages kids get from the media, and even from school, are responsible for making them do bad things?

M: Yes, I am. I think that every young person is essentially good. I mean you see violent students, students who are violent in class, but put them on a one-to-one basis, and they are usually very friendly. It’s not that they’re really bad. It’s that they’re product of their environment. If you give them a more caring environment, you really can change the kind of actions they take.

W: Well, what about all the social support systems?

M: You see the problem is that social support systems have really fallen apart. Take for example, Big Brother Big Sister Programs or After School Programs. I don’t mean just letting them stay in school until 6 o’clock, doing whatever they want. They should be doing healthy, supervised activities, a structured program of activities, instructional programs, or it could be athletics. A lot of our schools used to have football team, or basketball team, or baseball teams, but the funding for programs like those has been cut. They’ve been eliminated. So that leaves the child with a lot of energy and nothing to do with it.

W: What do the Big Brother Big Sister programs do?

M: Well, they have people a little older, say in their 20s, who are willing to spend time on an individual basis with the students in the middle school or in high school. See, the problem is that a lot of kids don’t get the one-on-one attention they need. But kids need to see that somebody really cares about them.

W: But what about kids who really do commit crimes? Stealing, pick pocketing or drug abuse, or something worse. I mean you do get cases where kids become involved in really serious crimes. I mean what should be done with kids like that?

M: Well, let me say that preventing crime is definitely better than punishing it. It’s better to have good role models and stop crime before it starts. But we also need harsher punishments. You see some countries where drug crimes carry a maximum sentence of 20 years or life imprisonment, and the crime numbers go down very fast. Having stronger punishment does reduce crime. But you have to be sure that the punishments are fair. We’re talking about juvenile crime. But white collar crime needs to be punished, too.

青少年的活动应当健康并加以引导( healthy and superviced activities, structured and instructional program or atheletic activities ),他们需要的是真正的关心,但 Big Brother Big Sister 能提供学生需要的 one on one 式交流的组织,却因的经费太少无法进行下去( fall apart , be eliminated )使青少年的活动失去方向。对于参加吸毒 drug abuse ,偷盗,等犯罪行为的少年,重要的在于防患于未然, preventing crime is better than punishing it ,但文中反复强调 punishment 一词,指出惩戒也是必要的, harsher punishment, stronger punishment 震慑作用的存在,使得犯罪数量的确骤减。

  Q16-Q20
