　　应该具有的责任感，三是他知道合作团结的团队精神。

　　Man: And why should you be the Dartmouth usher?

　　Dan: Well, I've given this a lot of thought,

　　我考虑了很久

　　and I think I can answer your question in three parts.

　　And I'd like to start with the third part first.

　　但我想先说第三个方面

　　If it's cool, unless that would be confusing,

　　in which case I can start at the beginning.

　　highlight integrity, responsibility and consideration.

　　Well, from St. Jude's I've learned integrity.

　　From being an older brother, I have learned responsibility.

　　And from my parents who have sacrificed everything to send me to this school,

　　It really comes down to one thing Dartmouth is my dream

　　and I've never asked Dartmouth but I think it’s been dreaming of me.

　　1. Well, I've given this a lot of thought and I think I can answer your question in three parts.

　　短语精解：“give something a lot of thought”的意思是“对某事想了很多，对某事考虑了很多”。短语中的something除了是“代词”，是名词的话，还是可以放于thought的后面，但是要加上介词to，即：give a lot of thought to something。例如：

　　Most people don't give a lot of thought to their tires except for how they look.（很多人对轮胎不会考虑太多，除了它的样子之外。）

　　短语精解：in three parts中的part是“部分”的意思，介词in表示对象，那么in three parts的意思就是“分为三部分”。

　　It is a novel in three parts.（它是分为三部分的一本小说。）

　　2. And I'd like to start with the third part first.

　　短语回顾：“would like to do something”的意思是“想要做某事”。再如：

　　I would like to express my thanks for all that you have done.（我想对你所做的一切表示我的感谢。）

　　Mrs. Hunter would like to be always awake-ready for a brawl.（亨特太太喜欢永远醒着——准备大吵大闹。）

　　短语回顾：start with的意思是“从......开始”。再如：
To work out a plan, one has to start with investigation.（制定计划要从调查研究入手。）

　　Our group had five members to start with.（我们小组开始时只有五个人。）

　　3. If it's cool, unless that would be confusing, in which case I can start at the beginning.

　　俚语点拨：cool是俚语，在这里的意思是“没问题的”。“If it is cool...”的意思是“如果它没问题的话。”句中的it是指代“Dan从第三部分开始回答老师的问题”这件事情。

　　语法精解：in which case主要用于引导非限制性定语从语，相当于 and in that / this case，其意为“如果是那样 / 这样的话。如：

　　She may be late, in which case we ought to wait for her.（她可能迟到，因此我们应该等她。）

　　He may be busy, in which case I’ll call later. （他可能忙，如若如此，我以后再来拜访。）

　　拓展讲解：in which case相当于引导词，当然不能在in的前面加上and这个词，但是in this or that case不是引导词，是一个介词短语，在in的前面可以加上and。我们来看一个例子：

　　我可能要住院，如果那样我就不去度假了。

　　误：I may have to go into hospital, and in which case I won’t be going on holiday.

　　正：I may have to go into hospital, in which case I won’t be going on holiday.

　　正：I may have to go into hospital, and in that case I won’t be going on holiday.

　　4. Well, from St. Jude's I've learned integrity.

　　短语回顾：learn something from something（or sb.）的意思是“从某事或某人身上学到......”。短语中的from是“从”的意思。例如：

　　I am sure we will learn a lot from it.（我肯定我们将从中学到很多东西。）

　　We can learn many things from news. （我们可以通过新闻学到好多东西。）

　　语法点拨：通常from something放于谓语的后面，但是这句话把这个介词短语放于句首，目的在于“强调”。

　　5. From being an older brother, I have learned responsibility.

　　语法点拨：being an older brother是动名词形式做介词from的宾语。From being an older brother放于句首目的在于“强调”。

　　6. And from my parents who have sacrificed everything to send me to this school, I've learned consideration.

　　短语点拨：sacrifice something to do something是一个固定搭配的短语，意思是“牺牲......去做......”。再如：
She sacrificed her career to marry him.（她为了嫁给他牺牲了自己的事业。）

　　语法点拨：“who have sacrificed everything to send me to this school”是定语从句修饰前面的先行词parents。from my parents......这个介词短语提到句首，目的在于“强调”。

　　7. It really comes down to one thing Dartmouth is my dream and I've never asked Dartmouth but I think it’s been dreaming of me.

　　短语精解：come down to是个固定短语，come是动名词，意思是“达到”，down是副词，是“下”的意思，to是介词，引出对象，整个短语的意思是“归结为......”。例如：

　　Your choices in the matter come down to the following points.（你对此事的抉择可归结为这几点。）

　　What do my choices in this one come down to? （归结而言，我们对此的选择是什么？）

　　8. That... that was a joke or an attempt at one.

　　短语精解：an attempt at something是一个名词性短语，意思是“对...... 的尝试，企图”。注意attempt后面的介词一定是at。它和动词make或者是介词with连用，意思都是“企图，尝试”，只是在句中扮演的角色不同而已。例如：

　　He flourished the weapon in an attempt at bravado.（他挥舞武器意在恐吓。）

　　He made an attempt at a joke.（他试图开一个玩笑。）
