　　THE AMERICAN TOBACCO heiress Doris Duke (1912-93) was many things: philanthropist, horticulturalist, seductress, surfer, collector and world traveler. She was also a woman of many houses (eight, to be exact), the most famous of which are Rough Point, her family seat in Newport, R.I., and Shangri La, an exotic Islamic-style palace in Hawaii. While Ms. Duke was known for the grand rooms she used for entertaining, the private areas are where her daring style shines brightest. Her bedrooms and dressing rooms were decorated with nobody"s taste in mind but her own, and created simply to please herself. And what seemed to please her more than anything was mother-of-pearl furniture.

　　In 1935, a 10-month world tour of a honeymoon took Ms. Duke and her first husband, James Cromwell, to the Middle East and India. Visits to Syria and Turkey soon followed. It was on these trips that she began her lifelong love affair with Islamic art and furniture─in particular, pieces inlaid with mother-of-pearl. In 1936, she decorated her Hawaii hideaway in this style, a process beautifully documented in the new book 'Doris Duke's Shangri La: A House in Paradise' (Rizzoli), the companion to an exhibition on display through Feb. 17 at New York's Museum of Arts and Design.

　　'In the great Newport houses of the period, the 'private' or master-bedroom areas were often more creatively adorned than the staid and traditional public reception,' said A. Bruce MacLeish, director of collections for the Newport Restoration Foundation. 'It appears Doris Duke outdid herself in creating a boudoir.' Indeed, Ms. Duke's ocean-view bedroom at Rough Point features an amethyst-hued carpet and electric purple Thai silk drapes, which make her striking collection of mother-of-pearl furniture─including a suite of 19th-century Austrian pieces formerly owned by Helena Rubenstein─gleam all the more.

　　At Shangri La, Ms. Duke's master bedroom, dubbed the Mughal suite, has a small, magical side room furnished almost exclusively with mother-of-pearl furniture made in Syria and North Africa. Her dressing room features shimmering chests from Damascus, along with a pearly vanity and chair that sit under a vaulted ceiling inlaid with mirrors. Primping in this room must have been like living in the loveliest of oyster shells (mother-of-pearl is in fact the iridescent lining of a mollusk shell).

　　Although Ms. Duke's pearl-decorated rooms were conceived decades ago, their look feels as fresh and otherworldly now as it did in the '30s. Adaptive creatures, mother-of-pearl pieces look at home in conservative, modern and tropical environs. Place a dresser in a bold-colored room and you'll make an antique-meets-Pop-Art statement. Appoint an airy white space with a fish-scale-shimmery chest and the effect is at once exotic and beach-y. Use multiple mother-of-pearl pieces to create a glamorously feminine powder room. Or use just one as a bureau-cum-bar in a swishy urban setting. The only challenge with these pearly pieces is deciding which rooms (or houses) to put them in.
