One Direction: Live While We’re Young

"I'm in Miami!" That's Niall Horan, 19, screaming to a crowd of 15,500 at the American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami in his best American accent. The catchphrase[1]) would be repeated by all five boys of One Direction(1D) throughout their 72 hours in the Magic City[2]).

After playing 60 sold-out shows in 16 countries on their Take Me Home World Tour, this is the guys' first time soaking in the tropical concrete jungle where bigger, louder, and hotter is better, and they're excited.

The weather is perfect but hot when I check into The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami (1D's home base for the weekend), six hours before showtime. Three hours later, I'm lost backstage in a blur of larger-than-life[3]) basketball decals[4]) and blue 1D crew signs plastering[5]) the walls. Inside a door marked ONE DIRECTION: WARDROBE, I see a Union Jack[6]) tank top[7]) being steamed (Liam Payne, 19, would later wear this to open the show). ONE DIRECTION: MUSICIANS ... Keep walking. ONE DIRECTION: CATERING.... Finally I know I'm in the right spot when I see six burly[8]), sunburned bodyguards. The sign on the door reads ONE DIRECTION: ONE DIRECTION.

There are a few things you should know about 1D, if you don't already. After losing season seven of the U.K.'s The X Factor[9]), the band defied[10]) all odds to become the most successful reality-bred group in the world—and yet they prefer T.G.I. Friday's or Chili's to any Michelin-starred food[11]). They were all raised by working-class families in England and Ireland, and before their rise to fame, Harry Styles, 19 spent Saturdays mopping floors at the W. Mandeville bakery in his hometown; Louis Tomlinson, 21, flipped burgers[12]) at the Doncaster Rovers football stadium; and Zayn Malik, 20, was a waiter at his family's restaurant (his first plane ride wasn't until the band hit it big[13]). Nowadays you can't go anywhere without seeing signs of their multimillion-dollar endorsement[14]) empire: a fragrance, a school-supply line at Office Depot[15]), a bedding collection, a HarperCollins book deal, a Nabisco partnership, and, in true pop-star form, Hasbro dolls. They spent more than half a year shooting their new documentary, This Is Us, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock of Super Size Me fame. And now they're in Miami and ready to live it up.

"This is the most sunburned I've ever been in my life!" Niall tells me, explaining that he wanted to enjoy the pool with Harry. "I'm not going to be a prisoner in my room—and the fans weren't intrusive." Some artists at their level of fame seem to expect fans everywhere, but not Niall: "I don't see how you could get used to people screaming in your face, and anyone who says different is lying." Zayn sits down next to me; his brown eyes sparkle. "We're humbled that so many fans have bothered," he says. The most soft-spoken of the bunch, he's quick to tell me he was not by the pool today—he can't actually swim. "It was a bit too busy for me," he adds. "I like to chill somewhere quiet. I get pleasure from the little things in life." Suddenly there's a new voice in the mix: "Great to see you, darling." I turn around to find a statuesque Louis standing over me. "Are you all right?" he asks in typical Brit fashion.

Next I'm being whisked off[16]) to catering—these guys are hungry. And, whoa, can they eat. A chef from London is making chicken for Harry and Zayn. A pint[17]) of Ben & Jerry's[18]) is thawing on the table. "Do you want some bananas?" Harry asks in an American accent.

I've spent more time with the band this spring than with my own family, and this chilled-out[19]) backstage atmosphere seems to be the norm. They're not treated like untouchable rock stars, certainly not by anyone in their 50-person crew, comprising mostly no-nonsense[20]) Brits. "We haven't actually got a rider[21])," Liam says of the contracts most stars create to make sure their dressing rooms are stocked to their liking. "We never actually sat there and made one. They bring us the stuff they think we like." I must look surprised, because he adds: "We're not really that diva[22])."

Documentary director Spurlock can attest[23]) that. “Their spirit is what makes them so successful,” he says on a phone interview, explaining that the boys won him over by launching chunks of bread at one another during their initial dinner meeting. (The food fight was started by Louis—big surprise.) “Having a good time keeps them from having to deal with a lot of stress that comes with the job.” Spurlock would know: He spent several months filming them all over the world, capturing their hometowns, families, happiest and saddest moments. “It could definitely be a lonely job. I wouldn’t be able to do this if I were on my own,” Louis confesses. “It’s great always having lads around—we’re like brothers.” Does it scare them, revealing so much to everyone? “Personally I don’t really mind,” he says. “I wear my heart on my sleeve[24]).” Harry adds, “I think people tell the cameras to turn off if they’re having a bad day, but we haven’t done that.” Its’ brave, especially considering the pressures of being under the microscope: every move they make (or don’t make) is headline news.

A typical workday for these guys could last 12 hours, but they retreat to a sweet ride after the show. “It’s filled with treats, Oreos, and Chips Ahoy,” Liam says of their seriously souped-up[25]) tour bus. But what do they do there? “We watch movies, go through DVD boxed sets, play video games—FIFA, sometimes Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty,” Liam says. “Really boring guy stuff,” Zayn adds. It’s hard to imagine anything about these guys being boring, especially when it comes to bus etiquette[26]). “I strategically pick my bunk[27]) so it’s away from the back room,” says Liam. “It gets messy there because of Louis and Zayn—they leave their clothes and shoes everywhere!” When given the potion of sleeping in a real big bed, though, Louis, Zayn, and Liam often prefer to stay on the bus. “It’s nice to have somewhere that feels like a home,” says Liam. But for Niall and Harry, it’s more about comfort. “I can sleep in buses if we’re traveling, but if I have a bed, I will go to it,” Harry says. “And oftentimes after shows, I’ll be so tired that I’ll fall asleep in my clothes. Last night at the Ritz, I left some shoes in the room opposite me, and when I went to get them, I accidentally locked myself out. For two hours I was asleep on the floor outside the hotel room.” Without a security guard?! Harry nods, and pauses. “In just a robe.”

In the catering room backstage, Niall reaches over us to grab the Ben & Jerry’s, offering me a taste before scooping a generous portion into a bowl. “This is unhealthy, but oh, well,” he says with a shrug.” I need to gain weight!” Heavy foods don’t seem to faze[28]) the boys, but then again, they don’t dance during the show like every other boy band out there. Why don’t they dance? “Most of the reason is that we can’t,” Niall admits. But surely record label head honchos[29]) explored that possibility? “No one ever tried to make us,” he insists.

Clearly the boys like to differentiate themselves from their competition, and on the big screen that would be their 3-D docu[30]) precursors Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Katy Perry: Part of Me. “I don’t think ours is anything like their movies,” Niall says. “There’s five of us, so it’s a bit funnier. And there aren’t many concert moments in it. The fans have seen the tour—they want to see the behind the scenes.”

It’s almost showtime, and we start to hear the familiar roar of the crowd in the arena. The boys make their exit to change into their wardrobe, quickly emerging from their dressing room looking just as cool and casual as they did chilling backstage. They start walking to the floor, singing Miguel’s “Do you …” in an impressively high falsetto[31]). Showing no signs of nervousness, they each give me big hug and kiss goodbye. Within seconds, they’ve disappeared to the stage, the chords of “Up All Night” flooding the stadium. It’s time for 1D.
