When YouAre Not Concentrating, You Are Concentrating

A disciple asked Zen MasterFarong, “When I am thinking carefully, how can I hold that concentration in mymind?” The Zen Master replied, “When you are concentrating, your mind is toooccupied to do anything. Complicated and circuitous discussions tire out boththe speaker and the listen. Simple and direct discourse avoids minute detailsand repetitions. When you are not trying to concentrate, you can use your mind.If you are always trying to concentrate, you have not really used your mind.What I am saying is that not trying to concentrate is the same as thinkingcarefully.”
