哀怨又彷徨;

我身旁飘过这女郎;

A Lane in the Rain

DaiWangshu

Aloneholding an oil-paper umbrella,
I wander along a long
Solitary lane in the rain,
Hoping to encounter
A girl like a bouquet of lilacs
Gnawed by anxiety and resentment.

A girl
The colour of lilacs,
The fragrance of lilacs,
With the worries of lilacs,
Feeling melancholy in the rain,
Plaintive and hesitating.

Shewanders along the solitary lane in the rain,

Holdingan oil-paper umbrella

Justas I do,

Justlike me,

Walkingslowly in silence,

Aloof,sad and melancholy.

Silently she comes closer,
Closer, giving me
A glance like a sigh;
Then she floats past
Like a dream,
Dreary and blank like a dream.

Like a lilac
Floating past in a dream,
the girl floats past me;
Silently she goes further and further,
To the crumbling wall,
Out of the lane in the rain.

In the mournful melody of the rain,
Her colour has faded,
Her fragrance has disappeared,
Vanished into the void;
Even her glance like a sigh,
Melancholy like lilacs.

Alone, holding an oil-paper umbrella,
I wander along a long
Solitary lane in the rain,
Hoping to pass
A girl like a bouquet of lilacs
Gnawed by anxiety and resentment.

The Alley in the Rain

DaiWangshu

Holdingan umbrella, I’m alone

Wanderingabout the long, long,

Lonelyalley in the rain,

Hopingto encounter

Agirl who bears her melancholy

Likea lilac flower.

Shehas

Thecolor of a lilac,

Thefragrance of a lilac,

Andthe melancholy of a lilac.

Shelooks sorrowful in the rain,

Sorrowfuland depressed.

Shepaces the lonely alley,

Holdingan umbrella,

Likeme,

Justlike me –

Walkingquietly and slowly

Incoldness, solitude and melancholy.

Quietlyshe comes close,

Closeto me and casts

Aglance, like a sigh.

Shedrifts away

Likea dream–

Sodreary and deep.

Likea lilac flower drifting by

Ina dream,

Thegirl passes by me;

Quietlyshe is walking away and away,

Toa broken hedge,

Tothe end of the alley in the rain.

Inthe plaintive tune of the rain

Hercolor fades,

Herfragrance disappears,

Sodo her sighing glance

Andlilac-like melancholy.

Holdingan umbrella, I’m alone

Wanderingabout the long, long,

Lonelyalley in the rain,

Hopingto see passing by

Agirl who bears her melancholy

Likea lilac flower.

Rainy Alley

DaiWangshu

Holdinga light umbrella

Iwalk back and forth alone

Ina silent, rainy alley,

Along, an endlessly long alley,

Hopingto meet

Agirl as sweet, as blue

Asthe lilac bud that knits her brows.

Asgraceful as lilac,

Asfragrant as lilac,

Assad as lilac:

Backand forth she walks,

Worriedin the rain,

Sadin the rain.

Holdinga light umbrella

Backand forth she walks, and walks,

Inthis silent, rainy alley,

AsI pace and plod,

Silent,alone,

Wearingmy solitude, my sadness and pain.

Quietlyshe walks close by me,

Thencloser, then closer,

Castinga glance

Asif of a sign,

Shefloats on by me

Plaintiveas a dream,

Ahazy dream,

Asad dream.

Asif what flies by me

Isa branch of lilac in a dream,

Thegirl flits by me

Insilence, in a distance

Moredistant, more distant,

Floatsto a ruined wattled wall

Atthe end of this rainy alley.

Andher roselike color fades,

Hersweet, sweet fragrance fades,

Tothe sad tune of the rain.

Herglance disappears, her sign disappears,

Herlilac-like sadness.

Holdinga light umbrella

Iwalk back and forth alone

Ina silent, rainy alley,

Along, an endlessly long alley,

Hopingto meet

Agirl as sweet, as blue

Asthe lilac bud that knits her brows.

Rain Lane

DaiWangshu

Myumbrella being unfolded on,

Alongthe lane, narrow but long,

AloneI was wandering down.

Ilonged to meet

Abitter lilac-like girl,

She’sin resentful sorrow.

Shewas such a girl:

Inlilac-like color,

Withlilac-like smell,

Shebehaves in the lilac-like gloomy style.

Shewas sad in raining,

Walkingback and forth, walking...

Walkingdown the lonely lane.

Sheupheld the umbrella-shaft

AsI did,

AsI did along the narrow lane.

Tobe silent,

Lonely,melancholy, indifferent.

Insilence she was approaching,

Onand on, approaching,

Glancingand glancing.

She’spassing by my side gently.

Icould see her as if dreaming of fancy.

Leavingme coldly, she looks vast and hazy.

Likea lilac floating lightly,

Intomy dream is the lady.

Gentlypassing by me,

Far,far away, she was vanishing silently,

Tothe end of the narrow way,

Inwhich a ruined fence lay.

Hersad rainy song,

Orher pale face with her feeling down,

Herfragrance was not strong.

Evenher sighing eyesight

Notso bright, but disconsolate.

Unfoldingmy umbrella, alone

Thelonesome rain-lane long, long,

Iwandered on, feeling down.

Ilonged to see a lilac girl,

Gentlyon her go,

She’sin resentful sorrow.

Holdingan oilpaper umbrella,

Iwandered alone down

along, long, solitary lane in the rain

hopingto meet that singularly sad girl

whoreminded me of a lilac.

Sheseemed so mournful in the rain,

Wandering,

withthe darkness of a lilac,

thesweetness of a lilac,

thesadness of a lilac.

Shewandered down this lonely lane

holdingan oilpaper umbrella

justlike me,

andlike me

walkingslowly and silently,

listless,desolate, disconsolate.

Silentlyshe neared me,

comingcloser,

givingme a look

asif with a sigh,

thenwafted past me as if in a dream,

bleakand distant.

Likea spray of lilac floating past

indreams,

thegirl passed me,

goingon quietly, further, further,

tillshe reached

thecrumbling wall

atthe lane’s end.

Inthe melancholy rain,

hercolor faded,

herfragrance lost, together with

herlook that was like a sigh, and

hersadness as that of lilac.

Holdingan oilpaper umbrella,

Iwandered alone down

along, long, solitary lane in the rain,

hopingto waft by that singularly sad girl

whoreminded me of a lilac.

Holdingan oil-paper umbrella, alone,

Sadnesslike the lilac,

Pensivein the rain,

Hesitatingand pensive.
