Hoveringover the spring flowers,
Agolden oriole trills its aubade.
Nearby,a lovely girl, jade-complected, replies,
Herfingers lingering on the zither’s strings.
Shewould play forever, she believes:
Suchare the love-thoughts of her spring years.
Butlet the petals wither: farewell oriole,
Andthen, how cold the wind, the tears.
