1. Lord Chen had an affair with Xia-ji, the most beautiful woman in Chen, the widowed mother of Xia-nan who lived in Zhu-lin. Lord Chen went to Zhu-lin often to meet with Xia-ji, but denied it when asked. It may help to imagine the second, final stanza as interior monologue, following Lord Chen’s denial.
