　　Set against human skills, such applications might seem incremental. Some breakthroughs, such as flight or the internet, obviously transform human abilities; facial recognition seems merely to encode them. Although faces are peculiar to individuals, they are also public, so technology does not, at first sight, intrude on something that is private. And yet the ability to record, store and analyse images of faces cheaply, quickly and on a vast scale promises one day to bring about fundamental changes to notions of privacy, fairness and trust.

　　Start with privacy. One big difference between faces and other biometric data, such as fingerprints, is that they work at a distance. Anyone with a phone can take a picture for facial-recognition programs to use.

　　Background information

　　Facial recognition：A face recognition system is a computer application capable of identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source. One of the ways to do this is by comparing selected facial features from the image and a face database. 是基于人的脸部特征信息进行身份识别的一种生物识别技术。用摄像机或摄像头采集含有人脸的图像或视频流，并自动在图像中检测和跟踪人脸，进而对检测到的人脸进行脸部的一系列相关技术，通常也叫做人像识别、面部识别。
