Moon, of the Democratic Party of Korea, declared victory on the night of the May 9 election. He promised supporters in Seoul. The former human-rights lawyer spoke of his hope to "build a new country where justice and principles will prevail." Moon, whose term is for five years, stressed his desire to also serve those who did not support him, and said he would "work hand in hand with the other candidates to move forward into the future."
After his victory was officially confirmed by the National Election Commission on the morning of May 10, he was inaugurated as the 19th president of South Korea. According to the commission, Moon won 41.08% of the votes, while Hong Joon-pyo of the conservative Liberty Korea Party received 24.03% and Ahn Cheol-soo of the centrist People's Party won 21.41%. The final voter turnout was tentatively put at 77.2%, with some 32 million of the 42 million eligible voters having cast their ballots, exceeding the figure for the previous presidential election in 2012.
