双语阅读英语外刊精讲：英国大臣“迟到”1分钟引咎辞职

　　A member of Britain’s House of Lords has drawn praise and puzzlement for resigning as a government minister because he was late to answer a question.

　　英国上议院一名议员因被问询时迟到，主动提交了国务大臣的辞呈，此举受到了称赞，也有人感到迷惑。

　　International Development Minister Michael Bates apologized to another member "for my discourtesy for not being in my place to answer her question on a very important matter." Bates said he was "thoroughly ashamed" and "shall be offering my resignation."

　　英国国际发展部国务大臣迈克尔˙贝茨向质询他的另一位议员表示道歉：“我很不礼貌，未能准时就位就一个非常重要的问题回答她的提问。” 贝茨说“他十分羞愧，应当提交辞呈”。

　　With that, he walked out of the Lords chamber to the astonishment of other members.

　　说完这些他走出了议院，留下一众惊呆的议员们。

　　Former Foreign Secretary William Hague, who now sits in Parliament’s upper chamber, said he hoped "my noble friend, who has given 20 years of strong public service" would reconsider.

　　现在议会上议院任职的前外交大臣黑格表示，他希望“20年来对公务鞠躬尽瘁的尊贵的朋友贝茨” 能收回关于辞职的言论。

　　Bates quit a previous government position in 2016 to walk 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) across South America for charity.

　　2016年，贝茨辞去前任政府的职务，到南美徒步2000英里 (3200公里) 进行慈善活动。
