Rare birds are returning to Wales

Wales hosts 4% of the world’s blanket bog habitat, which is seen as important in the fight against climate change because it’s very effective at storing carbon dioxide.

But many of these peatland landscapes are in poor condition after being drained and dug up.

A pilot project near Ysbyty Ifan in Conwy saw local tenant farmers block old drainage ditches and gulleys to bring back boggy conditions. Four years on and some of Wales’s rarest birds, curlews, and golden plovers, have returned to the site.

And now, conservation groups want more funding for this type of work made available as part of a big overhaul of farm subsidies that’s currently underway.
