　　不力行，但学文，长浮华，成何人?

　　Without putting into your practice physically and earnestly

　　What you learn from books,

　　You’ll become a person who is superficially clever.

　　How can you in your lifetime be a success?

　　但力行，不学文，任己见，昧理真。

　　If you only do practical things physically and earnestly

　　Without reading any books,

　　You’ll be stubborn persisting in your opinions,

　　And of the truth you’ll be in complete ignorance.

　　读书法，有三到，心眼口，信皆要。

　　The methods for reading books

　　Mainly include the three uses:

　　The uses of your mind, your eyes and your mouth

　　Must be really carried into your practice.

　　方读此，勿慕彼，此未终，彼勿起。

　　When you just begin reading this book,

　　You should not yearn for that one.

　　Until your reading of this book is done

　　You must not begin reading that one.

　　宽为限，紧用功，工夫到，滞塞通。

　　Room should be left when you draw up a plan for reading

　　Although you must study hard constantly.

　　So long as you make constant efforts,

　　Finally you’ll understand everything like seeing the light suddenly.

　　心有疑，随札记，就人问，求确义。

　　If you have doubts and questions,

　　You should timely take reading notes.

　　Then you should modestly consult others.

　　So that you can exactly answer the questions without any doubts.

　　房室清，墙壁净，几案洁，笔砚正。

　　Keep clean your study

　　As well as the study walls.

　　Your books and desks must be tidy and spotless,

　　Your writing brushes, pens and inkslabs must be placed at their right places.

　　墨磨偏，心不端，字不敬，心先病。

　　If you cannot stand upright when you grind to prepare Chinese ink,

　　You are revealed that on your work you are not mentally concentrated.

　　If you don’t write your handwriting respectfully,

　　It is known that there must be first something wrong with your mind.

　　列典籍，有定处，读看毕，还原处。

　　Various ancient books you read

　　Should be arranged at fixed places.

　　When you finish reading them,

　　You should put them back to their original places.

　　虽有急，卷束齐，有缺坏，就补之。

　　Although you have something urgent to do,

　　You must still put the books you read in good order.

　　If the books are damaged in some way,

　　You should do timely mending and repair.

　　非圣书，屏勿视，敝聪明，坏心志。

　　Nothing but Confucianist books and other books by virtuous writers

　　Must you read.

　　Otherwise, you’ll be misled

　　And morally harmed.

　　勿自暴，勿自弃，圣与贤，可驯致。

　　Don’t you give yourselves up as hopeless,

　　Don’t you either be resigned to your backwardness.

　　People who are wise and virtuous

　　Can be equaled by you finally if you keep working hard and persist in your studies.
