English National Opera to leave London as arts funding gets levelled up

Over recent years, English National Opera has received around 12 million pounds a year from the Arts Council – around twice what it gets in box office receipts.

Next year, it's off the list. It will be offered a transitional grant of 17 million pounds to help it reorganise and create a base out of London, possibly Manchester.

It's part of a much wider shifting of cash out of the capital. The Royal Opera House, the National Theatre and others in London are facing cuts with cash being moved to other regions.

The Shakespeare North Theatre in Prescot, Blackpool's illuminations and libraries in Barnsley, Warwickshire and East Yorkshire will all get funding for the first time.
