My name is Oorbee Roy. I'm also known as Aunty Skates.

我的名字叫奥尔比·罗伊。大家叫我 “滑板阿姨”。

I started skateboarding when I was 43 years old.

我43岁时开始玩滑板。

I thought it's too late for me. I'm going to get hurt. I'm going to fall. People will laugh at me.

我本来觉得43岁才开始有点太晚了。我可能会受伤、会摔倒、会被人笑。

Once my kids started skateboarding and my husband was skateboarding, I said: "You know what, I don't care about any of that." All I know is I don't want to be standing here all the time.

不过在我孩子们和丈夫都开始玩滑板后，我说：“你猜怎么着，我不在乎之前担心的那些事情了。” 我就是不想一直站一旁看着他们玩。

I started skateboarding in a sari during Covid. I was also trying to keep the kids entertained. And I said: "Let's go to the skatepark. I'm going to take my sari, and we'll see what happens."

My daughter was with me. She got in the [skating] bowl, took some video.

I felt like I was flying. Something got set on fire.

I think it's breaking [a] cultural norm and maybe smashing some stereotypes.

And that's what really resonated with people and within four months of being on TikTok, I had over 100,000 followers.

Skateboarding has taught me so much about how to live my life. When you fall, you get back up. You learn from your fall, and then you go back and you do it again.

I've had women in their twenties come up to me and say: "Hey, thank you so much for showing me that I can, you know, grow up, get married, have children, and still be a skater. I don't have to give up on that."
