I'm Buli.
Georgie
And I'm Georgie. We've got a question from one of our listeners.
Question
Georgie
What ties all of these words together is that they're all words to describe a person's lack of interest or enthusiasm, but there are definitely some differences.
Buli
我们首先来看看和 “interested(感兴趣的)” 意思相反的 “uninterested(不感兴趣的)”。
Georgie
Exactly, so we hope our listeners are interested – not uninterested – in this programme! Let's hear more examples.
Examples
He was uninterested in the history lesson and stared out the window instead.
I suggested we do a picnic this weekend, but they were uninterested in the plan.
Buli
Georgie
Now, 'indifferent' is similar because it implies a lack of interest, but it's more about a lack of any strong feelings. If you're indifferent about something, it means you don't care either way. For example, I'm not really a big fan of football so I'm usually indifferent about who wins the match.
Buli
I have to say I feel the same way.
Examples
John asked me which movie I wanted to watch, but I'm indifferent, I don't mind either way.
I'm indifferent about taking on the new project. I'll do it if needed, but I'm happy for someone else to lead it.
Buli
Georgie
Yes, apathy is a deep disinterest in what's going on around you. Not only that, it implies a lack of motivation or willingness to take action. Because of this, it can be a sign of decline in someone's mental health. Let's listen to two examples.
Examples
His friends noticed he had become apathetic, losing interest in hobbies and activities he once enjoyed.
The charity's effort to raise awareness about climate change was met with an apathetic response from the public – they showed little interest in changing their behaviour.
Buli
Georgie
It suggests a cool, unconcerned attitude. Now, our colleague was very late for work this morning… but he arrived in a very nonchalant way without acknowledging he was late, as if there were no issues!
Buli
Examples
She gave a nonchalant shrug when asked about the missing report, not showing any concern.
Despite the chaos around him, he remained nonchalant, sipping his coffee and reading the newspaper.
Buli
Georgie
I don't think you are very nonchalant, Buli! You definitely show when you are a bit stressed. OK, let's summarise.
Buli
