And I'm Phil. We have a question from one of our listeners.
Question
Phil
There's a lot of overlap between these words, but there are some important differences that you need to remember. Let's start with 'carry', which is the simplest.
Tianqi
Phil
That's right! It can focus on the action of holding something and moving it to somewhere. It can also mean to have with you when you go somewhere. Listen to these examples.
Examples
The worst thing about shopping is having to carry heavy bags home at the end of it!
I always carry my bag with me. It's got everything I might need in it!
Phil
Now let's look at how the other verbs are different, starting with 'take'.
Tianqi
Examples
Can you take this package to your brother?
I'm going to take that cake to the party to share with everyone.
Phil
Another way that we use 'take' is to talk about the things that we need to have with us for a specific purpose or occasion.
Tianqi
Examples
I mustn't forget to take suncream on holiday with me.
I'm going to take my computer to the technician. I need her to have a look at it.
Phil
Now, let's move on to 'bring'. We often use it to talk about moving something for a particular purpose. However, there is a very important difference – direction.
Tianqi
Examples
Oh no! I forgot to bring suncream. Right, I'd better go and buy some.
I've brought my computer for you to have a look at. It's making a funny noise.
Tianqi
Examples
Oh no! I left my keys upstairs. Could you fetch them for me? Thank you!
If you need those documents, I'll go and fetch them for you.
Phil
Because both 'fetch' and 'bring' refer to movement towards the speaker, there are times when either can be used.
Tianqi
Examples
Could you fetch some water? We're going to need it.
Could you bring some water? We're going to need it.
Tianqi
