Question
Dear BBC 英语教学, I would like to differentiate the nuance between 'marvel', 'wonder' and 'miracle'. Thank you.

这位听众想知道三个与 “奇观;奇迹” 这个意思有关的单词 “marvel”、“wonder” 和 “miracle” 之间有哪些区别。首先需要注意的是,这三个单词虽然都可以作名词,但它们分别还具有其他词性的含义。
Phil
Yes, so these are all words that can be used to talk about things that are surprising, incredible, and amazing. Let's start by looking at the nouns 'miracle', 'marvel' and 'wonder'.
Buli
“Miracle” 和 “wonder” 都可以指 “令人吃惊的、不可思议的东西”。同时,这两个词还可以用于描述假设中的事物。来听一组例句。
Examples
So many other people applied for that job that it was a miracle that I got it!
(那么多人申请了这份工作,我能得到它实在是个奇迹!)
After that terrible first half performance, it was a wonder they didn't lose the game.
(在上半场出现如此糟糕的表现之后,这支队伍没有输掉比赛真是不可思议。)
Buli
和上面的例句中 “miracle” 和 “wonder” 所表达出的 “某件事令人难以想象” 的意思相比,“wonder” 和 “marvel” 在作名词时,还可以指 “惊人的、令人印象深刻的事物”,常常带有褒义并可以替换使用。来听一组例句。
Examples
The new transport system in the city is a real marvel. It makes it so much easier to get around.
(这个城市的新交通系统真是太惊人了。它让出行变得特别方便。)
This collection of poems is an absolute wonder. The way the writer uses language is breathtaking.
(这本诗集实在是一部杰作。作者运用语言的手法令人赞叹。)
Phil
There's not really a difference in meaning between these uses of 'wonder' and 'marvel'. What is different is that 'wonder', as a noun, can also refer to the feeling that you have when you see something surprising or incredible. Let's listen to two examples.
Examples
I can't even describe the wonder I felt when I saw the enormous waterfalls.
(我甚至难以描述我看到那巨大的瀑布时内心的惊奇。)
There's a wonder that you feel when you walk into ancient buildings like these.
(当你步入像这样的古老建筑时,你会感受到震撼。)
Buli
在上面的例子中,“wonder” 都被用来描述 “某人见到某种惊人的、令人印象深刻的事物时感到的惊奇和惊讶”,这是 “marvel” 一词所不具有的意思。
Phil
Now, let's look at 'wonder' and 'marvel' as verbs. They can have a similar meaning – to feel surprise and amazement at something. Listen to these examples.
Examples
She just stood and marvelled at the beautiful scenery.
(她就站在那,惊叹于眼前的美景。)
I sat and wondered at the clear sky full of stars.
(我坐下来,好奇地望着着澄澈的星空。)
Buli
在上面的例子中,“wonder” 和 “marvel” 都用作动词,意思是 “对某事感到惊奇和惊讶”。在表达这个意思时,我们通常用这两个词搭配介词 “at”,组成固定搭配 “wonder at something” 或 “marvel at something”。需要注意的是,“wonder” 作动词时还有另一个意思:“好奇地思考或琢磨”。来听一组例句。
Examples
I've been wondering whether I should start looking for a new job.
(我琢磨着我是不是该找份新工作了。)
I wonder what the best way to learn English is.
(我想知道学英语最好的方法是什么。)
Phil
Another way that we can use 'wonder' is as an adjective. It's a bit informal, and we use it to say that something is an incredibly effective example of something, especially when we're trying to exaggerate a little bit. Listen to these examples.
Examples
This new medicine claims to be a wonder cure, but scientists are not so sure.
(据称这种新药疗效神奇,但科学家们对此有所怀疑。)
Our new product really is a wonder tool. It can make any job easier!
(我们的新产品实在是一个非凡的工具。它能让任何工作都变得更加轻松!)
Buli
在上面的例句中,“wonder” 都作形容词使用,意思是 “神奇的,非凡的”,用于形容 “某物在某类东西中表现或效果异常突出和明显,通常带有夸张的意味”。说到夸张,“miracle” 这个词也可以作形容词使用,用法和 “wonder” 是类似的,意思是 “某物在某方面的作用或效果非常好、不可思议”,通常用于药品或产品的广告中。来听一组例句。
Examples
Scientists claim that this new medicine is a miracle cure for many diseases.
(科学家宣称这种新药对许多疾病来说都是一剂灵丹妙药。)
We think our method could be the miracle solution to your problems.
(我认为我们的办法能为你的问题带来奇迹般的解决方案。)
