These Desertas Island land snails are the size of a pea. They were rescued and bred in specially converted containers.

Heather Prince, Chester Zoo
"These were snails that were at risk of extinction or thought to be actually extinct in the wild. This is where we've managed to breed up from very low numbers to what we have here today."

(Chester Zoo)

Conservationists discovered just 200 surviving individuals on the island of Deserta Grande.

Those snails were believed to be the last of their kind, so they were collected and brought into captivity.

Imogen Newens-Hill, Chester Zoo
"Basically, so, there are some individuals left in the wild. And we just want to be able to distinguish the ones that we've bred and released, so that we can track them and track their progress."

The remote island's rats, mice and goats decimated the snails, eating them to near extinction.

Now, a perilous journey by sea and on narrow mountain passes took the newly bred snails back home for a fresh start.

A wild refuge has been restored for the snails on Bugio, a small neighbouring island in the archipelago.

Bugio is a nature reserve, and invasive species have been eradicated there.

Gerardo Garcia, Chester Zoo
"It'll be the perfect place for their new life where they'll have protection[s], humidity and a lot of food."

Restoring the natural habitats of these mountainous islands will see more snails in 2025.
