In January and February, stargazers around the world can see six planets across the night sky at the same time.

Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are visible to the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune can be seen through a telescope.

NASA, the US space agency, wrote in an article that "These multi-planet viewing opportunities aren't super rare, but they don't happen every year."

These events are sometimes called an 'alignment' of the planets.

But planets aren't really lining up next to each other like this.

All planets orbit the Sun on a flat plane but at different speeds and distances.

When they reach specific points in their orbits, they create an illusion of alignment seen from the Earth.

So, while such an alignment may not be special, it's less common seeing four or five bright planets at once.
