除了单词 “participate” 之外,“take part in”、“join in” 和 “sign up” 也能用来表达 “参加某事” 的意思。

I'm Buli.
Phil
And I'm Phil. We have a question from one of our listeners.
Question
“Take part in”、“join in” 和 “sign up” 都有 “报名” 或 “参加” 的意思,但它们在具体使用中有什么区别呢?
Phil
It's natural to want to know how to use these different verbs because their meanings are very similar. They are all close in meaning to 'participate', so it makes sense for us to relate each of these to 'participate'.
Buli
没错。以上三个表达都和一个单词 “participate(参加,参与)” 有着非常接近的意思。
Examples
Health experts are worried that fewer teenagers are taking part in sports.
Don't just sit there! If you're not actually going to take part in this class, you're not going to learn anything!
Phil
So, next we've got 'join in'. It can mean the same as 'take part in' – to participate in something. Listen to these examples.
Examples
I love the atmosphere at football matches. I always join in with all the chanting.
Cleaning the house is boring, but when everyone joins in, we finish it quickly.
Buli
Phil
So, it can refer to the moment when you start participating in an activity, or the action of deciding to do so. Listen to these examples.
Examples
I really wanted to help with the painting, so I picked up a brush and joined in.
Everyone playing that game looked like they were having fun, so I joined in!
Buli
Phil
It can also describe a much more informal process and mean something like 'become a member of'.
Buli
Examples
You're starting a fitness class? Sign me up!
I've signed up to the school's art club – it's great fun!
Buli
