It's natural to want to know how to use these different verbs because their meanings are very similar. They are all close in meaning to 'participate', so it makes sense for us to relate each of these to 'participate'.

Examples
Health experts are worried that fewer teenagers are taking part in sports.

Don't just sit there! If you're not actually going to take part in this class, you're not going to learn anything!

So, next we've got 'join in'. It can mean the same as 'take part in' – to participate in something. Listen to these examples.

Examples
I love the atmosphere at football matches. I always join in with all the chanting.

Cleaning the house is boring, but when everyone joins in, we finish it quickly.

So, it can refer to the moment when you start participating in an activity, or the action of deciding to do so. Listen to these examples.

Examples
I really wanted to help with the painting, so I picked up a brush and joined in.

Everyone playing that game looked like they were having fun, so I joined in!

It can also describe a much more informal process and mean something like 'become a member of'.
