我发现自己的英语表达有时候听起来会很生硬和没礼貌。比如，想让他人帮忙递东西，就会说成 “Give me that.” 我想知道英语中的礼貌表达有什么特殊用语或者规则？

This is a good question, and something I think a lot of our listeners will find useful.

That's true. 并且我得实话实说，虽然现在我已经不用 “give me that” 来让别人给我递东西了，但这句话我原来也没少用。But Beth, why does it sound rude anyway?

Beth
Well, it sounds impolite because 'give' is an imperative. Imperatives are when we use the base form of the verb at the start of a sentence.

原来如此。也就是说，“give me that” 这句话是一个由动词原形引导的祈使句，而当我们直接用动词原形引导祈使句时，听起来就会有些强硬。这种结构通常用在说明书和菜谱中，或者指导他人如何做某事时，用于传达命令或指令。但在日常对话中，这种直接由动词引导的祈使句就可能会显得有些直接，有时甚至有些粗鲁。

Alternatively, using modal verbs like 'can', 'could' and 'would' at the start of a question, and ending the question with 'please' will always help you sound more polite.

Yes. Indirect questions are used to add politeness. Compare these two requests: 'Can you pass me the salt?' and 'I wonder if you could pass me the salt.'

“Can you pass me the salt?（你能把盐递给我吗？）” 是一个疑问句，它直接向对方提出了要求；而 “I wonder if you could pass me the salt.（我想问问可不可以请你把盐递给我。）” 是一个间接疑问句，它通过将原本的疑问句后置，在句首添加另一个引语或礼貌用语的方式间接地表达出自己的请求和目的，因此会显得更加礼貌。在英语中，人们经常用间接疑问句来向他人请求帮助，特别是在面对不熟悉或者不认识的人的时候。

We start indirect questions with phrases like 'I wonder if you could…', 'Could you show me…' and 'Do you know…'. Let's hear some examples.

Do you know what the answer to this maths question is?

（能请你为我演示一下这道题的解法吗？）

Another way we can add politeness is by using expressions with 'if'.

These can all go at the end of statements or questions, but some can also go at the beginning, or even in the middle. Let's listen to some examples.

Examples
I'd love some salt, if that's OK.
（我想加一点盐，如果可以的话。）

Could you open the door for me, if you don't mind?
（如果你不介意的话，可以帮我开一下门吗？）

If you have time, could we talk about this tomorrow instead?
（如果你有时间的话，我们可以明天再讨论这件事情吗？）
