Buli
I'm Buli.

Phil
And I'm Phil. We have a question from one of our listeners.

Question

Buli

Phil
Yes, but let's think about the different things we should include when responding to someone's invitation. First, if you want to be polite in English, you should say 'thank you', whether you are accepting or refusing the invitation.

Buli

Phil
Now you've said thank you, you need to say how happy you are, or would have been if you could accept it.

Buli
比如,“I would have come if I weren't so busy today.(要是我今天不这么忙的话我就会来参加了。)”

Examples
Thanks. I am so happy you invited me.

Thank you so much. It would have been great.

Buli

Phil
You can start by saying 'I'm sorry', 'I'm afraid', 'unfortunately'. Then give the reason you can't come.

Buli
其中,“I'm afraid…”

Examples
Thank you so much. It would have been great, but I'm afraid I can't come.

Thanks. I would have really loved to come, but, unfortunately, I'm on holiday then.

Buli

Phil
This could be vague – 'next time', or you could mention a specific date or event – 'let's try next Tuesday'. Listen to these examples.

Examples
Thank you so much. It would have been great, but I'm afraid I can't come. Let me know next time, though.

Thanks. I would really love to come, but unfortunately, I'm on holiday then. Maybe next month?

Buli

Phil
Good expressions to use here are 'I'm really looking forward to it' or 'I can't wait'. Listen to these examples.

Examples
Thanks. I am so happy you invited me. I can't wait!

Thank you so much. It looks fantastic. I'm really looking forward to it.

Buli
上面例句中的 “I can't wait(我等不及了)” 和 “I'm really looking forward to it(我真的很期待)” 都是在接受邀请时常用的表达。

Phil
So, here are some ways to accept and reject invitations politely. Remember to thank people and say how good the invitation is. If you're accepting the invitation, say how much you are looking forward to it. If you're rejecting it, remember to apologise, explain why, and sound willing to do something in future.

Buli
