Beth
Hello and welcome to Question and Answer of the Week. I'm Beth.

Buli
And I'm Buli.

Question

Beth
This question makes me want to go on a trip, Buli…

Buli
And me! So, we're going to explain the similarities and differences between these types of accommodation.

Beth
We'll start by comparing 'hotels' and 'bed and breakfasts', or 'B&Bs' as we often call them. In terms of similarities, both are places you can stay overnight in a private room, usually with a private bathroom – an ensuite, and where you can have breakfast.

Buli

Beth
'B&Bs' offer a more personalised experience and are often converted houses – in fact, it's possible that the owners live there. They have fewer rooms, offer basic amenities like Wi-Fi and parking, and your breakfast is likely to be homemade. Let's listen to some examples.

Examples
We're staying in a hotel in the centre of London. It has a rooftop pool on the 20th floor!

This B&B is so sweet. The owners are really friendly – they gave us great recommendations for local restaurants.

Buli

Beth
That's a useful tip indeed. OK, now let's compare 'motel' and 'inn'. These are similar to each other in that they are usually located by roads for travellers on road trips.

Buli
没错,“motel(汽车旅馆)” 和 “inn(旅馆,旅店)” 非常相似,它们都通常位于公路沿线。

Beth
And that's also probably why you'll often see the word 'inn' or 'motel' in the names of hotels, which makes the place sound more traditional, even if they are just more like hotels.

Buli

Beth
'Inns', on the other hand, are smaller and offer a bit more of a personal homely touch. You're more likely to find an inn in a rural setting, along a country road. And you'll also usually get a simple meal at an inn too.

Buli

Examples
It's a 10-hour drive. Let's stop at a motel to get a good night's sleep before continuing the journey.

We stopped at a lovely inn for a drink and a place to rest our head. The place was decorated with pictures of the surrounding mountains.

Beth
OK. Now, 'hostels' are quite different. They are very low-budget options, and you will get a bed, but usually not a private room or a private bathroom.

Buli

Example
When I was a student, I always stayed in hostels because they were so cheap. But I don't miss sharing a room with strangers!

Beth
At a 'homestay', you live in someone's house, eat there and experience the local culture and people on a very personal level.

Buli

Example
My homestay host cooked fresh French meals every day when I lived there. I really got a chance to practise my French.

Beth
And lastly, a 'resort' is a hotel which has extra sports and leisure facilities, often in a natural type of environment. If you stay in a resort for a week on your holiday, you could choose to never leave the place because everything you need is there.

Buli
