摘要:用名词复数表示习惯、日常活动或爱好

你问我答

用名词复数表示习惯、日常活动或爱好

内容简介

一位听众来信询问为什么 “I usually wear T-shirts” 和 “I usually wear a T-shirt” 都可以表达 “我经常穿 T 恤衫” 的意思。在日常对话中表述生活习惯或常做的事时,比如 “我每天午饭都吃苹果”,我们通常可以使用名词的复数形式 “I eat apples for lunch everyday”。不过,我们也可以用单数 “I eat a apple for lunch everyday” 来强调 “我每天午饭只吃一个苹果”。听节目,跟主持人 Georgie 和步理学习在表示生活习惯、个人喜好和定期发生的事件时如何使用名词的单复数形式。

大家好,欢迎收听 BBC 英语教学的 “你问我答” 节目。I'm Buli.

Georgie
And I'm Georgie. We have a question from one of our listeners.

Question
“I usually wear a T-shirt” 和 “I usually wear T-shirts” 有什么区别吗?我觉得很奇怪的是,人不是只能穿一件 “T-shirt” 吗,为什么 “I usually wear T-shirts” 可以表达 “我通常穿 T 恤” 的意思?

Georgie
Well, the short answer is that there is not much of a difference between the two sentences. They both convey the idea, as you said, that 'a T-shirt is the type of clothing I wear all the time'.

Buli
所以,虽然当我们说 “I usually wear T-shirts” 的时候用了复数 “T-shirts”,但这并不是 “我经常同时穿很多件 T 恤衫” 的意思。

Georgie
No. We use the plural form of a noun when we're talking about habits or preferences in general. And here, with the use of the adverb 'usually', you can see that we're talking about a habit, so there are multiple occasions, not just one.

Buli

Georgie
Exactly. Let's hear some more examples where we use the plural form of a noun to describe a habit.

Examples
I mostly eat apples as a snack – I don't like chocolate or sweets.
(我主要吃苹果当零嘴。我不喜欢巧克力或糖果。)

I always listen to podcasts before bed.
(我总是先听些播客再上床睡觉。)

Georgie
Now, that first person is likely to only eat one apple as a snack each time. And the second person probably only listens to one podcast before bed, but they've used the plural form.

Buli
没错。通过以上的讲解和例句,我们已经知道了在表达生活习惯、日常活动或喜好时,通常使用名词的复数形式而非单数。不过,这并不意味着我们在谈论通常发生的事情时必须使用复数形式。比如,当我们提到和某个相对具体的事件有关的物品时,比如有一定重复性的活动,使用单数形式也是比较自然的。

Georgie
Yes. For example, you might say 'I wear T-shirts to the office every day' – the plural, but 'I usually wear a T-shirt to the annual office party'. Now, this isn't a strict rule. As we said at the beginning, the two sentences are very similar in meaning.

Buli
除此之外,在表达习惯或日常活动时我们还可以通过名词的单数形式来强调 “只会用到一个某物”。比如,让我们来对比一下接下来这两个说法:“I usually eat sandwiches for lunch” 和 “I usually eat a sandwich for lunch”。

Georgie
Right. They both probably mean one sandwich – unless the speaker is very hungry! But with the second sentence, the speaker is making sure we know that they only eat one sandwich for lunch.

Buli
最后让我们来总结一下。本期问题提到的两个句式 “I usually wear a T-shirt” 和 “I usually wear T-shirts” 都可以表达 “我经常穿 T 恤衫” 这个意思。它们之间的区别在于,在谈论自己的习惯或喜好时使用复数 “T-shirts” 听起来会更加自然,因为说话者很可能不只有一件 T 恤衫。而我们除了可以在描述某个相对具体的场合时使用单数 “T-shirt” 之外,还可以用单数形式强调 “我只会穿一件”。
