This is a great question! There's a really simple answer, but then it gets a bit more complicated!

Why don't we start with the simple answer?

Good idea! OK, so the simple answer is that if there isn't an adjective, we can use either 'a part of' or 'part of' – both are possible. Listen to the examples.

Well, here, if we are talking about a single thing, we need to use the article. If something is an important part of something or an interesting part of something or a worrying part of something, then we need to use the indefinite article. Listen to these examples.

Potatoes are an important part of British cuisine.

This is an interesting part of the story.
（这是故事中十分有趣的部分。）
