Good morning, welcome to Guide Dogs. How can I help?

Dr Karen Brady, Training and Behaviour, Guide Dogs
"For some of our dogs, it can be really hard in training to ignore small, fluffy things that run really quickly. So one of the innovations that we have at Guide Dogs is we have 'squirrel car'."
That's right, squirrel car. Once the guiding harness goes on, focus is all important.
So I just pop it down just for now.
And squirrel car is now the way they put that focus to the test.
Just mark them for when they look away.
Dr Karen Brady, Training and Behaviour, Guide Dogs
"And squirrel car is essentially a lifelike-looking squirrel toy that has been tied to a remote control car, so that we can then drive this around our dogs while they learn to perform their guiding duties. And it really helps prepare them for the real world when that squirrel does fall out the tree, or does cut across the pavement in front of them, so they can focus on their guiding work and keep people safe."
And we'll just build up a little bit of that speed. Good girl. Good girl.
Dr Karen Brady, Training and Behaviour, Guide Dogs
"We don't start by whizzing it straight across in front of the dogs. We build it up really slowly."
Jayne McCubbin, BBC correspondent
"The curiosity is there, isn't it?"
Dr Karen Brady, Training and Behaviour, Guide Dogs
"Absolutely. So they have this learning history, and it builds up to be so strong that when they're out in the wild and they do see a squirrel, and we do practise it outside as well to get them used to the concept, they just go, 'Oh, it's a squirrel, I need to get to the kerb'."
Dr Karen Brady, Training and Behaviour, Guide Dogs
"We do this with squirrels, prams, pushchairs, bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, all those kind of things that the dog's going to have to face in the real world."
Jayne McCubbin, BBC correspondent
"She did really well then."
Charlotte Warlowe, trainer, Guide Dogs
"Oh she's amazing. She's such a good girl. Once she's in the mode, she's like, 'Right, let's do it. I just love to work. Let's go.'"
All being well, about five weeks, and then she'll be a fully-qualified guide dog.
Very curious, what a good girl.
Of course, chasing small, fluffy things is absolutely in a dog's nature. But when you are a guide dog…
Now they're fighting over the small, fluffy things.
… it has to be the right kind of fluffy thing at the right time.
