Rare cheese made from donkey milk
Pule cheese is from Serbia. You might be surprised to hear that it's made from donkey milk. You might be even more surprised to hear that it sells for more than €1,200 a kilo.
The price is partly down to the fact that donkeys only produce a limited amount of milk every day.
During her lactation period, a female donkey can only produce 300ml of milk per day and half of this is consumed by her foal.
When you consider that just one kilo of cheese requires 20 to 30 litres of milk, you can start to see how the relative scarcity of milk makes the cheese very expensive.
The cheese is produced only on the Zasavica nature reserve in Serbia.
The reserve started trying to produce the cheese over a decade ago, but found the process to be difficult as it is hard to get donkey milk to the correct consistency.
The complicated process, and slow rate of milk production means that the reserve can only produce 25 to 30 kilos a year, making it a rare delicacy.
