除了可以说 “I am about to succeed” 以外,还能如何表达 “我马上就要成功了”?本期节目中,主持人 Phil 和步理将辨析三个可以用于描述 “事物即将发生变化” 的表达:“on the verge of”、“on the brink of” 和 “on the cusp of”。

I'm Buli.

Phil
And I'm Phil. We have a question from one of our listeners.

Question
What's the difference between 'on the verge of', 'on the brink of' and 'on the cusp of'?

Buli

Phil
This is an interesting question. These expressions can often be interchangeable, but let's look more closely at what they mean.

Buli
首先,让我们来看看 “on the verge of”。

Phil
Yes, like all the expressions here, we follow it with a noun or a gerund. And 'on the verge of' can be used with both positive and negative things. Listen to these examples.

Examples
Now I'm on the verge of achieving all my goals, I'm so happy.

After those terrible results, it looks like the company is on the verge of bankruptcy.

About to captain the team in the final, she stands on the verge of greatness.

Phil
So, now let's have a look at 'on the brink of'. We should look at what 'brink' means.

Buli

Phil
Yes, so 'brink' is more commonly used with negative or dramatic situations, although it can also be used with positive things, it's just less common. Listen to these examples.

Examples
Many species are on the brink of extinction.

The organisation is on the brink of collapse, unless it can get support soon.

With the rise of AI, we're on the brink of a very different future.

Phil
Finally, let's look at 'on the cusp'. In theory, this is slightly different.

Buli
所以,“on the cusp of” 具有两种含义,一种是 “处在……

Phil
So, that means that we can use 'on the cusp of' with two different complements, and we can also say 'on the cusp between' with two complements. However, we can also just use one complement in a similar way to 'on the verge of' and 'on the brink of'. Listen to these examples.

Examples
Increasing research into driverless cars means that we are on the cusp of a new era.

Teenagers often worry about identity because they are on the cusp of childhood and adulthood.

After losing so many matches, the team are on the cusp of relegation.

Buli
总的来说,问题中提到的三个表达 “on the verge of”、“on the brink of” 和 “on the cusp of” 都可以用于描述 “一个人或事物即将发生某种变化,或者处于某种状态的边缘”。只不过,“on the brink of” 更常用于描述 “负面的、剧烈的变化”,而 “on the cusp of” 还可以用来描述 “处于两种状态之间”。
