New images of the Sun show areas never seen before

A view of the Sun that's never been seen before – its south pole.

The shimmering bright atmosphere is its hottest part, at a million degrees Celsius.

The darker lofted clouds are cooler wisps of gas, but still at a searing several thousand degrees.

The pictures have been taken by the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter spacecraft.

They're the closest and most detailed ever taken, and they'll help scientists learn how the star that gives us life on Earth actually works.

Pallab Ghosh, BBC correspondent
"From Earth, the Sun seems like a bright, featureless disc. But at certain frequencies, space telescopes can reveal its detailed structure, how magnetic fields twist and turn on its surface to create solar flares and loops of gas. No one really knows how these magnetic fields work, because scientists are unable to see how they move and shift on the north and south poles. But now, they can."

Professor Lucie Green, Astrophysicist, University College London
"The reversal of the polar magnetic fields on the Sun is, for me I think, one of the big open questions in science. And what we'll be able to do with Solar Orbiter is measure, for the first time, really important fluid flows that grab pieces of the magnetic field of the Sun and transport them to the polar regions."

The new research will help scientists learn more about our closest star and predict its raging moods.
