Why is it difficult to take a good photo of the Moon?

There's a beautiful Moon, and you pull out your phone for a snap.

First problem – it's overexposed.

"We often see a small Moon in a very dark background, so the phone tries to take a photo for night time. And unfortunately on the surface of the Moon, it's daytime – bright, bright daytime."

So lock the auto-exposure, and dial it down, or take the photo before it gets dark.

Second problem – the Moon is tiny!

"The mobile phone cameras, they're deliberately very very small. They're very good at taking big sweeping vistas, taking selfies really close to your head, but they're pretty terrible at taking photos of small things that are far away. If you go from one horizon to the other, that's 180 degrees. The Moon and the Sun are just half a degree across, so they appear in the sky actually quite small."

Most phones use digital zoom, which doesn't add any detail.

Some higher-end phones have optical zoom, which actually boosts magnification… that's more like it.

But if yours doesn't, you could use a clip-on zoom lens or hold your phone to a telescope if you have one.
