Becca
A bit of both, actually.

Oh dear. Let's get straight into this question so you can have some time to rest!

我听外国朋友说话的时候，发现他们经常会在句子开头或者是句子中间用到 “as in” 这个短语。我一直没有懂这个短语的具体含义和作用，请问可以讲解一下吗？

Buli
This is a good question. But before we talk about the use of 'as in', I'm curious to know, Becca – do you have any foreign friends?

Becca
Foreign, as in from a different country?

Buli
Yes. Foreign like from other places – abroad.

Becca
Actually, I have many foreign friends. Some were born in different countries and moved to the UK when they were young. Others I met while travelling and working abroad.

Buli
Hmm, how interesting. As in, you were living as an expat.

Becca
Yes, I was living and working outside of the UK for a short period of time.

Buli
That sounds exciting! And where did you meet these foreign friends?

Becca
Oh, you know – social events organised by the hostel I was staying in, as in pool parties, beach barbeques, morning yoga sessions – stuff like that.

Buli

There were a lot of examples of 'as in' in our conversation. So, Becca, what does 'as in' mean, and how can we use it?

Becca
Well, 'as in' is a phrase used to do a few things. The first time I used the phrase, I wanted to check that I understood what you meant by 'foreign', so I said "Foreign, as in from a different country?" Often, we can use 'as in' after repeating something we're not sure about, followed by our idea of what it could mean. And so, it appears in the middle of a sentence.

Buli
Ah, I see. 也就是说，你想知道我用 “foreign” 这个词的时候具体想要表达它的哪个含义，所以就在 “foreign” 后面用 “as in” 来引出对 “foreign” 这个词的解释来向我确认我是不是想说 “来自其它国家的人”。

Becca
Yes. You also used it in a slightly different way when responding to my comment about living abroad.

Buli
Really? When did I do that?

Becca
When I mentioned that I had met friends while I was travelling and working abroad, you started your next line of speech with 'as in' and rephrased my experience as 'living as an expat'.

Buli
Ah yes, I did. 在刚才的对话中，我在 “as in” 之后换了一种方式重新表述了 Becca 所说的话。在口语中，我们还可以把 “as in” 放在句首，引出对对方所说的话的另一种表述，从而确认双方对这件事的理解是一致的，传达出 “我听懂你的意思了” 这个含义。

Becca
Sometimes it can feel like you're clarifying and rephrasing at the same time because you wouldn't follow the phrase 'as in' with the exact same thing that was previously said.

Buli
是的。特别要注意 “as in” 的这两个用法都不能用来引出和之前所说的完全一样的内容，必须要换一种方式来表达，这样才能显得自己听懂了对方的话或者有需要澄清或者确认的地方。就比如，我们不能像说车轱辘话一样地说 “I was living as an expat as in I was living as an expat”。

Becca
Absolutely not! And speaking of examples, the last way we use 'as in' is to give examples. I talked about how I had met foreign friends through social events, as in pool parties, beach barbeques, morning yoga sessions…

Buli
That sort of stuff.

Becca
Exactly.

Buli
在口语中，“as in” 还可能出现在句子的中间，用来衔接某件事和它具体的例子。比如，“I don't eat sweets, as in candies, chocolates, marshmallows, etc.（我不吃甜食，比如糖果、巧克力、棉花糖等等。）”

Becca
I like using the phrase 'as in'.

Buli
As in, you use it often or just like it?
