As the Earth hurtles through space, our rocky planet inevitably slams into tiny bits left by other celestial bodies. Sometimes, these encounters can be seen from the Earth's surface as meteor showers.

The Perseid meteor shower, or Perseids, which is the result of Earth passing through the debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, appears in the night sky from July to August every year. In 2026, it's predicted to peak overnight between 12th and 13th of August, when observers are likely to see the greatest number of meteors.

英仙座流星雨，简称 “Perseids”，是当地球穿过斯威夫特-塔特尔彗星留下的碎片带时形成的流星雨，每年 7 月到 8 月出现在夜空中。2026 年，英仙座流星雨预计将在 8 月 12 日夜间至 13 日凌晨达到极大，届时，观测者最有可能看到数量最多的流星。

To best enjoy the meteor shower, try finding a dark, open and safe location, allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and then look up to the night sky after midnight.

If the sky is really clear, you may also see different streaks of colour as the meteors burn through the atmosphere, indicating the elements making up each meteor. For example, a yellowish streak may indicate the presence of iron, while a violet streak may result from calcium vaporising and glowing in intense heat.
