单词 “take” 作名词时，可以表示 “看法、观点”。表达 “a hot take” 指的是 “一个颇为大胆，非主流、可能引发争议的观点”。不过，“a hot take” 也不一定真的是一个语出惊人的独到见解，因为不少人会用它来提出一个其实十分普通甚至有些无聊的观点，以达到幽默调侃的效果。听节目，跟主持人菲菲和 Becca 学习如何使用这个表达。

Becca, I can't help but notice that you're wearing flip-flops with socks?

Becca
Well, my work shoes got so wet in the rain yesterday, and I didn't want to show my toes at work!

Feifei
Oh! Socks with flip-flops could be considered uncommon here in the UK, you know. It could be common in some places, but I know some people here find it really odd.

Becca
Well, I've got a hot take – socks and flip-flops are comfy, and everyone should wear something like this inside.

Feifei
'A hot take'? That sounds quite dramatic!

Becca
It does, doesn't it? 'A hot take' is simply a controversial or surprising opinion. It's something you say when you think other people might disagree with you.

Feifei
So, I could say, 'I don't know if this is a hot take, but I think pineapple belongs on pizza'?

Becca
You could definitely say that! Especially if you're talking to someone who is passionate about cooking authentic cuisine. They could be pretty mad at you for saying that!

Feifei
Let's hear some more examples.

Examples
I don't know if this is a hot take, but I don't like going on holiday in the summer. I prefer to go in the winter months when it's cooler.

My hot take is that chocolate is overrated – you think you like it, but you don't really.

I always prefer the film adaptations to the books. Anyway, that's just my hot take.

Yep! You might hear it online, on social media, in podcasts or in conversations with friends. It's often used to introduce an opinion that's likely to cause a negative reaction.

Feifei
So, you can say 'hot take' or 'I've got a hot take' before giving your opinion, almost like a warning.

Becca
Exactly. And here's an interesting thing about 'a hot take'. 'A hot take' doesn't necessarily have to be completely outrageous. Sometimes people jokingly call an ordinary opinion 'a hot take' because they know it might start a debate.

Feifei
我们需要注意的是，使用 “a hot take” 这个表达并不意味着这个观点就一定是错误的。它更多指的是一种 “相对少见、略显大胆或容易引发大家讨论和争议的看法”。

除此之外，人们有时候也会带着幽默或调侃的语气来使用 “a hot take”，故意把一个再普通不过、几乎没有争议的观点说成是 “惊人见解”，以达到搞笑的效果。比如：“Hot take – I like milk.（大胆说一句：我喜欢喝牛奶。）” 显然，这个观点大概率不会引发什么争论。正因为它过于平常，所以用 “hot take” 来引出它，反而产生了一种反讽和幽默的效果。

That's right! Unless you're talking to someone who hates milk or is lactose intolerant.

Feifei
That's true. And, lastly, could I say I have 'a cold take' for opinions that are kind of ordinary and common?

Becca
You could. 'A cold take' is a safe, obvious, or universally agreed-upon opinion that lacks surprise. But I'll say, Feifei, I haven't used the expression 'cold take'.

Feifei
I see. Perhaps it's less common then. 从意思上来说，“a cold take” 可以看作是 “a hot take” 的反义表达，用来形容 “一个非常常见、普遍被接受、几乎不会引发争议的观点”。比如：“Cold take: Exercise is good for your health. （一个毫无争议的观点：锻炼有益健康。）”

不过需要注意的是，“a cold take” 并不是一个特别常用的固定表达。而我们更常用 “a hot take” 来反讽那些其实一点也不 “火爆” 的观点。
