  New York

The Pentagon plans to mobilize thousands of National Guard and reserved troops in the next several days to fill military jobs that would be key in the advent of the US war with Iraq, the New York Times reported today, citing Defense Department officials. As many as 10,000 reservists, mainly military police units, will be activated for security duty in the United States and abroad in what will likely be the first in the wave of mobilizations, unnamed officials told the Times. Although no final decisions have been made, the Pentagon, if President George W. Bush orders the attack on Iraq, has plans to activate roughly the same number of reservists as were used in the Gulf War of 1991 when about 256,000 reservists were summoned to active duty, the Times said in its online edition. So far, 50,755 reservists have been mobilized for the defense of the United States after the September 11th attacks and for the war in Afghanistan, the Times said.

  Berlin

German Defense Minister Peter Struck said his country will abate planned purchases of military aircraft and missiles, a move critics say would undermine its commitments to peace-keeping and anger its allies. Struck told Parliament on Wednesday Germany will reduce its orders for Airbus A400 and military transport planes to 60 from 73, and make a decision on the European meteor air-to-air combat missile project in the coming weeks. Germany’s hope of capping its defense budget at 24.4 billion euros, that’s 24.38 billion US dollars, comes amid the build-up to a possible war on Iraq as others increase their military outlays.

  Sydney

Thousands of firefighters and home owners armed with gun hoses battled bush fire around Sydney yesterday, as helicopters flew blindly in the black smoke, dumping tons of water on flames. Strong winds bringing dry air from the outback fanned the fires for a second day, spreading fear that this year’s drought, the worst in a hundred years, will see the island continent of 20 million suffer its worst bushfire season, the worst ever in its recorded history. Thick black smoke billowed over Australia’s largest city, as dozens of bushfires roared through semi-rural suburbs, destroying at least 20 homes, killing one man.

  Athens

Greek air traffic controllers joined a twenty-four-hour strike yesterday called by public-sector workers to press for pay demands in a move poised to disrupt domestic and international traffic. The Controllers’ Union decided later on Wednesday to continue servicing as normal all emergency, military and VIP flights, but other traffic from midnight, 22:00 hours GMT onwards will be limited to one flight per destination for each airline, union officials said. Schools will be closed and hospitals will operate with a skeleton staff.

  Jakarta

Explosions ripped through McDonald’s restaurant in a car show room in the Indonesian city of Macassar yesterday, killing two people, police said. There were two blasts, the first in the McDonald’s counter in the Ratu Indah Mall. Two people died. Police officers Rafael Sandi told reporters by telephone from Macassar, Unso Westy Island. Two people were seriously wounded, he said. The first explosion occurred at 6: 55 pm, that’s 10:55 GMT. And the second blast, which caused no casualties, occurred about an hour later in a show room about 4 kilometers away, he said.
