  SECTION 4: LISTENING TEST

  Part A: Note-taking And Gap-filling

  【原文】

It is important to consider the effects of products or technologies on future generations. The development of pesticides, the gasoline-combustion engine and nuclear power are all examples of inventions that were initially beneficial but later resulted in environmental problems. First, for the individual, your own health is tied to environmental health. The products you choose must be safe for both you and the environment. And you can become a savvy consumer by learning the following terms used on product labels. A product labeled “non-toxic” is not harmful or poisonous to humans, but it can be harmful to plants or animals especially if it becomes waste. Some products are labeled “biodegradable”, over time microorganisms can break down these products; however some biodegradable products may take hundreds of years to decompose. The term “natural” on a label does not guarantee that it is environmentally safe. Lead and mercury are natural, but also poisonous. “Organic” means that a product is derived from living organism without the use of chemicals; however some hazardous chemicals can also properly be called organic. The phrase “environmentally safe” on a package may refer to the packaging rather than the contents. Remember that almost everything has some impact on the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency or EPA is a good source for advice about which products are safe to use. The EPA sets up and enforces standards to help protect the environment from pollution. Second, for the world. The world faces many environmental issues. The unrestricted use of nuclear power has long-term environmental effects. Alternate sources of energy needs to be investigated for future. The rapid growth in world population has led to even more pollution and faster depletion of natural resources. Development brings jobs but negatively affects land, resources, air and water. Some farming methods impact the environment through destruction of cropland, and use of harmful chemicals. The rapid growth in world population is putting a strain on the world’s land and resources. The clearing of tropical forests for timber and farm land has resulted in soil erosion and loss of many animal species. Oceans are also at risk. Over-fishing and pollution create problems for aquatic life. Our clean water supply is threatened by industrial waste and untreated sewage. Some resources are disappearing at an alarming rate. Non-fuel minerals such as copper, zink, lead and mercury may be gone within 50 years at the current rate of use. Mining also causes environmental damage. Earth atmosphere is also at risk. Using fossil fuels to produce energy causes pollution and damage to the ozone layer and may contribute to global warming. For yourself you can help protect the environment by becoming involved. Pay attention to advertising, labels and packaging and give feedback to companies. Get information from environmental organizations and consider joining one. Review the ways your lifestyle affects the environment. Voice your concern about the environment by writing letters to elected officials and the media. Because the environmental problems in your community directly affect your health and way of life, it is up to you to take action against local polluters.
