　　As the world stresses over how to de-escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula, one group with the closest cultural ties to North Korea is shrugging off the war of words.

　　Ethnic-Korean Chinese immigrants who hail from the Chinese provinces that border North Korea, discount the chances of war, with many expressing indifference to the emotive confrontation.

　　In Seoul’s Daerim-dong neighborhood, the largest quarter for the country’s hundreds of thousands of Korean Chinese migrant workers and families, people follow but downplay the seriousness of the North Korean regime’s threats.

　　Most of the estimated 3 million ethnic Koreans in China come from the northeastern provinces that the Yalu and Tumen Rivers separate from North Korea.

　　The strength of the cross-border bond is difficult to quantify, but faith in a shared bloodline is stronger among Daerim-dong residents than many native South Koreans.

　　“Those born and bred here are immediately negative when it comes to North Korea. We tend to be more neutral,” said a woman who works at a community group, speaking on condition of anonymity.

　　Since the 90’s, South Korea’s economic boom, a dwindling birth rate and a common language paved the way for an influx of immigrants. According to official figures at the end of February, 450,000 Chinese passport holders live here.
