　　India on Monday abruptly cancelled peace talks withits neighbour and regional rival Pakistan. Thecancellation came under three months after Indianprime minister Narendra Modi warmly shook handsat his inauguration in New Delhi with his Pakistanicounterpart, Nawaz Sharif.

　　Syed Akbaruddin, India’s foreign ministry spokesman, announced that the Modi governmenthad cancelled a visit to Islamabad next week by Sujatha Singh, foreign secretary, because ofPakistani “interference” in India’s internal affairs.

　　印度外交部发言人宣布，莫迪已取消了印度外交秘书苏嘉达•辛格(Sujatha Singh)原定下周对伊斯兰堡的访问，原因是巴基斯坦“干涉”印度内部事务。

　　India was angered by an invitation from Abdul Basit, Pakistan’s high commissioner in NewDelhi, to Kashmiri separatists for “consultations” with him before the proposed Islamabadmeetings.

　　India has also complained of repeated ceasefire violations, including attacks on Indian troopsacross the so-called line of control that separates the two armies in Kashmir.

　　A Pakistani foreign ministry official described India’s decision as “a setback to what seemed likean emerging opportunity for peace”. The ministry was expected to issue a formal statementlater on Monday. The foreign ministry official said it appeared that Mr Modi’s government had“very quickly begun to harden its stance against Pakistan” adding that “there seems to be adeparture in policy”.
