　　A South African judge on Tuesday sentenced OscarPistorius, the Olympic and Paralympic star, to servea maximum of five years in jail for the culpablehomicide, or manslaughter, of his model girlfriendReeva Steenkamp.

　　周二，奥运会及残奥会明星奥斯卡•皮斯托瑞斯(OscarPistorius)因杀害其模特女友瑞瓦•斯滕坎普(ReevaSteenkamp)，被南非法官以过失杀人罪判处五年监禁。他将为此在监狱度过最多五年时间。

　　Pistorius was also given a three-year suspended sentence for contravening the firearmscontrol act by firing a pistol in a busy restaurant, to run concurrently. This will be suspendedfor five years “on condition that within the period of suspension the accused is not foundguilty of a crime where there is negligence involving the use of a firearm”.

　　此外，皮斯托瑞斯还因为在繁忙的餐馆开枪而违反枪支管控法案，被判处三年缓刑，与上述判决一并执行。这意味着后者将会缓期五年后执行，“条件是缓刑期间被告不得出现与使用枪支有关的过失犯罪”。

　　Delivering the lengthy 70-minute judgment, Judge Thokozile Masipa said it was “a sentencethat is fair and just, both to society and the accused”. She said a non-custodial sentence“would send the wrong message to the community”, while adding that “on the other hand along sentence would not be appropriate as it would lack the element of mercy”.

　　在长达70分钟的判决宣读过程中，Thokozile Masipa法官表示，“不论对于社会还是对于被告，这一判决都是公平而又公正的”。她表示不判处监禁“会向社会传递错误信号”，并补充说“另一方面，监禁时间过长也不合适，那样就显示不出法律的仁慈一面”。

　　After the court adjourned, Pistorius was led down to the holding cells. The Steenkamp family’slawyer told reporters that “justice was served today” adding that the five-year term was “theright sentence”.

　　The decision is the final chapter of a dramatic and sometimes controversial trial that hascaptivated a global television audience.
