北风冷触庭前竹。

白头阿监抱琴来，

未语眉先蹙。

弹遍瑶池旧曲，

韵泠泠，

人间天上，

四十年来，

Awhite-haired eunuch enters, bearing his zither;

Erehe speaks, his brows knit in fret.

Tonespurling, clear waters flow, clouds cascade.

Hereon earth, up in heaven,

Wellon forty years now

Hurtsthe heart, stabs the eye.³

Istill recall, back at first

PearGarden’s numberless bevy of famous blossoms.

Pipeand song drifting aloft among slate clouds:

Weenjoyed all the luck of the sylphs.

Heavea sigh: and now this aging servant

Thanksto milord’s grace draws a scanty stipend.

Ican’t bear to turn back

Duskyprospects dim and desolate

Cryinga song at road’s dead-end.⁴

1.The first lines of this poem recall an allegorical ode to bamboos Su Shi (SuDongpo) wrote while jailed by Censorate officials. His first six lines: “Todaythe wind comes from the south/And blows atumble courtyard bamboos. / Low andhigh, struck to tonal harmony: /Armor and blades cuffing in profusion. /Desolately sad, sense of wind and snow / That can snap but not disgrace them”(translated by David McCraw). Gu’s lyric shares Su’s rhyme category and hisimplicit comparison between noble bamboos and a singer out of luck.

2.Jasper Pool refers to the Heavenly Court; it introduces the Heaven/ imperialcourt vs. Earth/exile motif that organizes the eunuch’s lament.

3.Here and elsewhere in this poem Gu paraphrases lines from Li Yu’s laments inexile.

4.Out of favor at court, the high-minded but frustrated Ruan Ji, one of the SevenWorthies of the Bamboo Grove, would drive his cart through the wilds till hereached a dead end, then cry bitterly.
