Issupported by an ancient tree,
Encircledby white clouds.
Theforest deep, no visitors arrive,
Buta spring babbles at the bottom of the brook
Inthe valley of hidden birds.
Gentlewinds come to sweep
Andsweep the fallen leaves into the stove,
Sohe may close the door, bake potatoes, trim the lamp.
Thelamp expires, potatoes smell sweet, day dawns.
Nofakery—
Thoughhe hobnobs with nobility.
Thoughhe treads the red dust,
Stillhe always returns to the rosy clouds;
Tatteredshirt, frazzled patches,
Unmendable,
Unsewable.
Hehas less hair than a man of the world,
Butfewer troubles, too.
Helights incense before the Buddha,
Takesa nap at ease.
