Thereare trodden paths under lovely trees—
Thepeaches and plums in gardens in the east.
Whenbean leaves drift about in autumn breeze.
Theleaves begin to fall as life has ceased.
Thepretty blossoms too have had their day;
Themighty mansions someday will be still.
I’llride a horse and soon be on my way
Tolive alone beneath the Western Hill.
It’shard enough to keep me safe and sound
Andharder still to protect my wife and child.
Whenchilly frost hits grass upon the ground,
Theyear will bring an end to things grown wild.

inthe Eastern Garden—peaches, plum trees,
bean-leavesflying everywhere, in Autumn wind.
Butfrom now on, everything withers and dies.
Blossomingflowers will one day shrivel,
Thornsand weeds will sprout in the courtyard.
Timeto mount my horse, to leave it all,
andhead for the Western Hills:
whenyou can’t be sure of your own security
howcan you care for your wife and children?
Frostthickens the wild grass.
Theyear grows old—there’s no more left to say.
