My newlywed husband said the samething every morning. “You’re beautiful today.”

One glance in the mirror revealedthat it was far from the truth.

A skinny girl with mashed hair onone side of her head and no makeup smiled back at me. I could feel my stickymorning breath.

“Liar,” I shot back with a grin.

It was my usual response. Mymother’s first husband was not a kind man and his verbal and physical abuseforced her and her two children to find a safe place. He showed up on herdoorstep one day with roses. She let him in and he beat her with those rosesand took advantage of her. Nine months later she gave birth to a 9lb. 13oz.baby girl—me.

The harsh words we heard growingup took root. I had trouble seeing myself as someone of value. I had beenmarried two years when I surprised myself. My husband wrapped his arms aroundme and told me I was beautiful.

“Thank you,” I said. The samethin girl with the mousy brown hair still stared back at me in the mirror, butsomehow the words had finally blossomed in my heart.

A lot of years have passed. Myhusband has grey in his hair. I’m no longer skinny. Last week I woke up and myhusband’s face was inches from mine.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

I covered my mouth, trying tohide my morning breath. He reached down and kissed my face.

“What I do every morning,” hesaid. He leaves in the early hours of the morning while I sleep. I miss ourmorning conversations, but I had not realized that he continued to tell me thathe loved me even while I slept. When he left, I rolled over and hugged mypillow. I envisioned the picture of me lightly snoring with my mouth open andgiggled.

What a man! My husbandunderstands my past. He’s been beside me as I’ve grown from an unsure younggirl to a confident woman, mother, speaker and author.

But I’m not sure that heunderstands the part he played in that transition. The words I heard growing uppierced my soul, yet his words pierced even deeper.

This Anniversary Day I plan towake early. I want to tell Richard how much I love him. He may look in themirror and see an extra pound or two, or wish for the day when his hair wasdark and curly, but all I’ll see is the man who saw something in me when Icouldn’t see it myself, and who leaves butterfly kisses, even aftertwenty-three years of marriage.

蝶吻

每天一早丈夫都对我说，“今天你真美。”

只要朝镜子看一眼就会明白，根本就不是那么回事。

我从镜子里看到的是一个不修边幅的女人在对我笑，一身皮包骨，脸上不涂脂粉，头发压在头的一侧，口鼻还吐出难闻的晨息。

我一边驳他，“你说谎，”一边笑。

这是我经常的反应。我母亲的第一个丈夫不是个好人。他对妻子不是骂就是打，迫使她不得不带着两个孩子另觅安身之处。就是这样他还找上门来，手里拿着一束玫瑰。她只好让他进门，可一进门，玫瑰花束就变成了打人的工具。他不但打她，还趁机强暴了她。九个月后她生下了一个女婴，那就是我，出生时我只有9磅13盎司。

我们这几个孩子成长过程中听到的粗言恶语在我们心中植根了。我甚至怀疑自己活在世上有多大价值。结婚后过了两年，我发现自己竟有意想不到的东西。丈夫双臂抱住我说我很漂亮。

我说，“谢谢。”

我照镜子望望面对我的依然是那个瘦削女子，满头灰褐色像鼠毛似的头发。但这一回那句赞美的话却在我心里像花似的绽开了。

又过了多年，丈夫额头已现华发，我却不再瘦削了。上星期我醒来时丈夫的脸离我只有几寸远。

“你想干什么？”我问。

我赶快捂着嘴怕呼出晨息。他弯下头吻了我的脸。
